There's Good News About Treatment and Survival of Breast Cancer

Labels: , ,

Few things are as terrifying as thinking you might have breast cancer: Surveys show it's women's number one health worry. However, 80% of biopsies are benign. And thanks to advances in testing and treatment, breast cancer is less deadly than ever, and curing it is not the toxic, disfiguring ordeal it once was.

The importance of regular breast screening cannot be overstated—nor, for those who have been diagnosed, the importance of understanding the treatment options and finding good medical care. That's what this breast cancer Health Journey is here for: to explain the risks and tests and to guide you through the full range of choices you have on your road to cure. Along the way, we dive deeply into the emotional aspects of this disease, talk to women who have beaten breast cancer, and introduce you to the doctors and experts who have helped them do it.

Am I at risk for breast cancer?

Labels: ,

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting women in North America and Europe. Close to 200,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2001. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women behind lung cancer. The lifetime risk of any particular woman getting breast cancer is about 1 in 8 although the lifetime risk of dying from breast cancer is much lower at 1 in 28. Men are also at risk for development of breast cancer, although this risk is much lower than it is for women.

The most important risk factor for development of breast cancer is increasing age. As any woman ages, her risk of breast cancer increases. Risk is also affected by the age when a woman begins menstruating (younger age may increase risk), and her age at her first pregnancy(older age may increase risk). Use of exogenous estrogens, sometimes in the form of hormone replacement treatment (HRT) may increase breast cancer risk, but use of oral contraceptives most likely does not increase risk. Family history is very important in determining breast cancer risk. Any woman with a family history of breast cancer will be at increased risk for developing breast cancer herself. Furthermore, known genetic mutations that increase risk of breast cancer are present in some families; these include mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. Between 3% to 10% of breast cancers may be related to changes in one of the BRCA genes. Women can inherit these mutations from their parents.. Genetic testing for mutations should be considered for any woman with a strong family history of breast cancer, especially breast cancers in family members less than 50 years, or strong family history of prostate or ovarian cancer. If a woman is found to carry either mutation, she has a 50% chance of getting breast cancer before she is 70. Family members may elect to get tested to see if they carry the mutation as well. If a woman does have the mutation, she may choose to undergo more rigorous screening or even undergo preventive (prophylactic) mastectomies to decrease her chances of contracting cancer. The decision to undergo genetic testing is a highly personal one that should be discussed with a doctor who is trained in counseling patients about genetic testing.

Some factors associated with breast cancer risk can be controlled by a woman herself. Use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), drinking more than 5 alcoholic drinks/ week, being overweight, and being inactive may all contribute to breast cancer risk. These are called modifiable risk factors. It is important to remember that even someone without any risk factors can still get breast cancer. Proper screening and early detection are our best weapons in reducing the mortality associated with this disease.

What is breast cancer?

Collections of cells that are growing abnormally or without control are called tumors. Tumors that do not have the ability to spread throughout the body may be referred to as “benign” and are not thought of as cancerous. Tumors that have the ability to grow into other tissues or spread to distant parts of the body are referred to as “malignant.” Malignant tumors within the breast are called “breast cancer”. Theoretically, any of the types of tissue in the breast can form a cancer, cancer cells are most likely to develop from either the ducts or the glands. These tumors may be referred to as “invasive ductal carcinoma” (cancer cells developing from ducts), or “invasive lobular carcinoma” (cancer cells developing from lobes).

Sometimes, precancerous cells may be found within breast tissue, and are referred to as ductal carcinoma in-situ (DCIS) or lobular carcinoma in-situ (LCIS). DCIS and LCIS are diseases in which cancerous cells are present within breast tissue, but are not able to spread or invade other tissues. DCIS represents about 20% of all breast cancers. Because DCIS cells may become capable of invading breast tissue, treatment for DCIS is usually recommended. In contrast, treatment is usually not needed for LCIS.

What is the breast?

Labels: ,

The breast is a collection of glands and fatty tissue that lies between the skin and the chest wall. The glands inside the breast produce milk after a woman has a baby. Each gland is also called a lobule, and many lobules make up a lobe. There are 15 to 20 lobes in each breast. The milk gets to the nipple from the glands by way of tubes called ducts. The glands and ducts get bigger when a breast is filled with milk, but the tissue that is most responsible for the size and shape the breast is the fatty tissue. There are also blood vessels and lymph vessels in the breast. Lymph is a clear liquid waste product that gets drained out of the breast into lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, pea-sized pieces of tissue that filter and clean the lymph. Most lymph nodes that drain the breast are under the arm in what is called the axilla.

Breast Cancer

Labels: ,

Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include

  1. Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older
  2. Genes - there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.
Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55
  3. Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Men can have breast cancer, too, but the number of cases is small.

Drug Rehab

Labels: , , ,

The rehabilitation programs for drugs and alcohol addictions are growing. There are new drug rehab centers and treatment groups being opened up all over. Though most of the drug rehab treatment centers have the same focus and the same goal of helping a person who has a drug or alcohol addiction get back on their feet, the approaches that are taken can vary greatly. Most often, we associate drug rehab programs with people who have gotten in trouble for drugs or alcohol and need to complete a program in order to comply with the law. While this is the case for a lot of people, there are also people that enroll themselves in a drug rehab program to help get better.

The problems of drug and alcohol addiction are widespread, and affect people all of origins, age and economic status. There used to be a lot of myths about the kind of people who attended these treatment centers, but the truth is, even some of the most respected professionals can have a drug problem also. You often may hear about drug rehab centers in Hollywood that are host to many a celebrity with a drug problem, but there are people everywhere that rely on the help that they can get from attending a program in a treatment center.

The kinds of treatment that a person can receive in a drug rehab center can range from outpatient care to intensive inpatient care. Even within those groups, there are different levels that people can fall into. Some of the drug rehab programs focus on the individual and are small in group size, while others may cater to the public and provide outpatient care for large groups. The kind of setting and treatment plan that works depends heavily on the person who is in the program. Different people can respond differently to types of treatment and programs. For those who have a problem with drug addiction, they may need hospitalization and intensive therapy to work through their drug problems. For others who are required to attend a drug rehab program by law or because of a conviction, may only have to attend group sessions.

The information that is shared in-group sessions and in inpatient treatment programs is held confidential and it is a safe place for people to talk about their problems and get the help that they need. Drug rehab centers focus their attentions on getting the person off of the drug, and teaching them how to live again. For many people who attend these programs, they also need to pursue follow up care to ensure they stay on the right path and do not return to their old patterns.

Adsense Profits GONE! Don’t Let It Happen To You!Profits Lost! Protect Your Adsense Profits

Labels: , ,

Did you know that Google AdSense makes some people thousands of dollars a year? While that seems a little farfetched in my opinion, I can agree that many people make a lot of money—if not their entire livelihood off of AdSense earnings. I’m guessing if you are reading this you are too and likely you’re not making a penny or two here and there, but a large sum of cash from them—otherwise why would you read an article about protecting profits from AdSense.

Yes, yes what a grand observation. But seriously how many of you worry every day that your AdSense cash will just go puff? Maybe your sites get removed from the search engines—though if they do it might well be your fault on that one. Or maybe Google decides you’re a bad influence or trying to cheat them out of a few pennies.

My biggest concern is users that either don’t know about Googles click monitoring, or are intent on destroying my income for some reason or another. Maybe it’s an ex that remembers you make money from AdSense, maybe it’s you competitor that wants to knock you out of the niche they would like to own? Maybe’s it’s your grandma who thinks she is doing you’re a favor by clicking a few ads—read a few hundred ads…

Either way it comes down to one simple fact. When Google thinks you’re trying to cheat them, they disable your account. And it’s not just a smack on the wrist and a warning no sire they lock it up and throw away the key. And all your hard work building a online empire, and sites just to make money with AdSense goes puff!

Some of you reading this are probably going YES! That happened to me/or oh my I didn’t even realize that could happen. Either way, while I can’t suggest anything for the people that have already been taken out of the game by vengeful/or even helpful yet unknowing saboteurs, other than to try using another network for your Ads–you might even like them a bit better then heavy handed Google.

I can tell you about something I found that fixes this problem once and for all—and in my case lets me have a full night’s sleep again without thinking about my income going pop goes the weasel. I found a very interesting little program—and it’s seems to be very reasonably priced as well. This program claims to be able to block out clicks to AdSense ads after a certain number of clicks is reached by any given user—for that day—thus preventing someone from ruining your income stream with Google.

Your jaw just hit the floor: What? And lose those clicks I worked hard for? But just wait; you can have the script replace the AdSense blocks with any ad code you wish once the click quota has been met for that user. After which you could display something such as AdBrite blocks—which look and act like google blocks anyway.

If you too think you could benefit from knowing that your AdSense is no longer in danger of fraudulent clicks. Please by all means check out this wonderful piece of software. To grab your copy of this awesome software please visit AdSense Click-lock, or if you would like to read more about it please visit AdSense Click-lock.

Google Adsense: Tips for Using Google Adsense

Like anything else, you’ll get out of Google Adsense what you put into it. The following optimization tips can help you grow your Google Adsense dollars:

Write interesting content and write every day.

Have more than one site. The more sites you have, the more ads have the potential
to get clicked.

Set up channels and monitor your statistics across all sites. If one site is performing
poorly, consider changing the content or the ad layout. Experiment!

Change the ad layout and notice which layout works the best for you. There are
many different layout options and there’s no way you can know going in which
one will perform the best.

If you’re blogging, writingup.com has a list of profitable topics. They state that
you don’t have to write on those topics but you might give it a try or at least plug
some of them in to the search engines.

Google different key words and phrases and notice how much and what kinds of content and ads you see.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Google Adsense: When Do I Get Paid Using Google Adsense?

Google Adsense pays you approximately 30 days after the end of the month in which you become eligible to receive payment. You become eligible for payment only when your Adsense account reaches at least $100.00. Suppose, for example, you started in January and at the end of the month you had not yet accumulated $100.00 in your Google Adsense account. You would then need to wait and see if your January and February earnings combined equal $100.00. If they do, you would be paid approximately 30 days after the end of the month of February, that is, you could expect payment near the end of March.

Another good reason to also use Adsense for Search is that you get to combine the earnings to reach the $100.00 payout minimum. So if your earnings for Adsense for Content do not reach $100.00 in time for the current payout, but when combined with your Adsense for Search earnings they do meet the payout minimum, you will be paid accordingly.

Google Adsense: Why Do I Need Google Adsense?

Because it’s there, it’s fun and it’s free. If you’re reading this, you obviously have some interest in the internet. You don’t even have to have your own site, although the more sites you use Google Adsense on, the more money you will make. For example, anyone can write a blog even if it’s just your own opinion on something.

You can also make money referring other people to Google Adsense. By placing a referral button on your site you increase your earnings potential. When a publisher that you referred makes their initial $100.00 within 90 days of sign-up and is eligible for payout, your account will also be credited $100.00. Additionally, they must never have registered for a Google Adsense account before.

Don’t be intimidated by the html code. It’s already formatted. All you have to do is choose the language and kind of button you would like, and copy and paste the html code to your site. Look for the referral code and more information under Adsense support.

Google Adsense: How to Write Great Blogs and Watch Your Adsense Dollars Add Up

The best thing about blogging is that there are no rules. You can write about anything you want. A self-publisher's dream! There are some things you can do though to maximize your Google Adsense profits. Narrow your subject. Don't just write about shopping. Write about shopping for antique dresser drawer pulls. Write every day. Have a blog at more than one site. If you develop a readership, you're more likely to increase your profits.

Write about something you know or want to know or at the very least care about. If you try to write a great blog based on a "hot keyword" yet it's something you could care less about, you'll likely not stay with it long. Experiment and see what works for you. You can write based on your own opinion or something factual. You can review a product or service or a movie. Read other people's blogs and notice how many reads they're getting. Above all, have fun. After all, it's free and if you're persistent you'll see your Google Adsense dollars adding up.

Google Adsense: How to Apply for the Program and Important Info on Paying Taxes

How to Apply to the Google Adsense Program

Applying for a Google Adsense account is quick and easy for any interested webmaster. Just point your browser to www.google.com/adsense and click on apply. Click on the drop down arrow under account type and select whether you're an individual or business. If you're not sure which one to choose, click on the question mark to the left. Next, select your country or territory.

Under website information, it asks for your primary URL. If you have your own website, list it here. If you are using a blogging site such as writingup.com or bloggingparty.com that URL goes here.

Select your website's primary language. Google adsense supports Chinese (simplified), Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Select the product you want on your pages. Adsense for Content means you will have advertising targeted to the content on your pages. For instance, if you write about flooring, you might have carpet ads on your page. Adsense for Search is for you to add a Google search box to your pages. To maximize your Google Adsense earnings, you will want to have both.

After that, it's just the regular contact information and you're all set. You should receive an email in 2 or 3 days letting you know if your application is approved.

Do I Have to Pay Taxes on My Google Adsense Earnings?

Google Adsense is required to collect tax information from those who participate in the program. If you're a business, you'll need to put your EIN number on your application. If you're an individual, all you'll need is your social security number. If you don't have that information when you initially sign up, you can still apply for the Google Adsense program. But be advised that Google Adsense will withhold payments to you until they receive your tax information.

While Google does not withhold taxes or provide any tax advice, they will send you a 1099 once your earnings reach a certain amount. Of course, if you are a Non-US business and have no activity in the United States, you will not need to provide this information. For more tax information regarding the Google Adsense program, visit the Google Adsense Support site. For other tax-related questions or concerns, you can log onto www.irs.gov.

Mesothelioma Patients

Labels: , ,

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart,[1] the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis.

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma.[2] Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking, but smoking greatly increases risk of other asbestos-induced cancer.Compensation via asbestos funds or lawsuits is an important issue in mesothelioma (see asbestos and the law).

The symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall) or chest wall pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss. The diagnosis may be suspected with chest X-ray and CT scan, and is confirmed with a biopsy (tissue sample) and microscopic examination. A thoracoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera into the chest) can be used to take biopsies. It allows the introduction of substances such as talc to obliterate the pleural space (called pleurodesis), which prevents more fluid from accumulating and pressing on the lung. Despite treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or sometimes surgery, the disease carries a poor prognosis. Research about screening tests for the early detection of mesothelioma is ongoing.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing mesothelioma is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions. Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history. A history of exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma. A physical examination is performed, followed by chest X-ray and often lung function tests. The X-ray may reveal pleural thickening commonly seen after asbestos exposure and increases suspicion of mesothelioma. A CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI is usually performed. If a large amount of fluid is present, abnormal cells may be detected by cytology if this fluid is aspirated with a syringe. For pleural fluid this is done by a pleural tap or chest drain, in ascites with an paracentesis or ascitic drain and in a pericardial effusion with pericardiocentesis. While absence of malignant cells on cytology does not completely exclude mesothelioma, it makes it much more unlikely, especially if an alternative diagnosis can be made (e.g. tuberculosis, heart failure).

If cytology is positive or a plaque is regarded as suspicious, a biopsy is needed to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A doctor removes a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope by a pathologist. A biopsy may be done in different ways, depending on where the abnormal area is located. If the cancer is in the chest, the doctor may perform a thoracoscopy. In this procedure, the doctor makes a small cut through the chest wall and puts a thin, lighted tube called a thoracoscope into the chest between two ribs. Thoracoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the chest and obtain tissue samples.

If the cancer is in the abdomen, the doctor may perform a laparoscopy. To obtain tissue for examination, the doctor makes a small incision in the abdomen and inserts a special instrument into the abdominal cavity. If these procedures do not yield enough tissue, more extensive diagnostic surgery may be necessary.

Another Day, Another Country for Angelina

Labels: , , ,

Angelina Jolie may be a woman of the world, but, at the end of the day, she's ours.

The roving Goodwill Ambassador and son Maddox returned to Los Angeles Friday following their whirlwind trip to Iraq on behalf of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Mother and child kept their eyes on the prize-their chauffeured SUV-as they made their way out of LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal, through a back entrance, accompanied by one bodyguard and one assistant.

When asked by our camerman how the trip went, Jolie nodded and said, "It was great."

And then she couldn't help but smile as she got into her waiting car, perhaps thinking of all the paparazzi waiting for her outside the front entrance of the terminal.

Not to mention the dude waiting for her back home.

Octomom's $250,000 Brood

Labels: , , , ,

Who says it's hard to find a job in California?

No word on what sort of fringe benefits are included, but Nadya Suleman's 14 children are each going to be earning $250 a day-for a total of about $250,000 altogether for three years-for starring in the reality show their mom has agreed to do for a British production company.

The details are as follows:

That's $125,000 collectively for 36 days of shooting the first year; $75,000 for 21 days in the second year; and $50,000 for 14 days the third year. The octuplets and their six brothers and sisters will be paid the same rate for any extra days spent on camera.

According to the contract filing, 15 percent of the kids' earnings will be placed in a trust account, as required by California law, that none of them will be able to get at until he or she is 18 or legally emancipated.

Considering all those burgeoning stars are only between the ages of 7 months and 7 years old, a judge will have to sign off on the contract filed today by Eyeworks UK in Los Angeles Superior Court before production can begin.

We'll assume that the producers either have already, or are in the process of, acquiring all the proper permits for such an endeavor.

The as-yet untitled series, due to start shooting Sept. 1, has been shopped as less of a day-to-day intrusion look at the family's life and more of a documentary-style show focusing on milestones in the children's lives.

Mobile Marketing Without Being Annoying

Labels: , , , , , , ,

WebProNews recently ran an article looking at a study, which indicated that spending on mobile advertising would reach $760 million in 2009 (20% more than last year). A spokesperson with mobile advertising firm Crisp Wireless took notice and set us up with a Q&A with Chief Revenue Officer and former member of Yahoo Search's Strategic Alliances team, Tom Foran.

It's looking more and more like mobile marketing will become unavoidable for businesses in the future. As competitors get on board, it's going to be harder to ignore for a company that doesn't want to get left in the dust. Have you tried out mobile marketing in any form? Tell us about your results.

People have their mobile devices with them 18 hours a day, as Mike Wehrs, President and CEO of the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) recently told WebProNews. "Why wouldn't you want to be able to deliver relevant information to them?" he added. "Because if you do it well, it doesn't become an advertisement. It becomes information that they were looking for anyway."

Tom Foran Following is the Q&A with Tom Foran.

WebProNews: Do you think mobile marketing will become unavoidable for marketers?

Tom Foran: Mobile marketing has matured to be a viable medium for many different types of marketers and brands. The categories experiencing the most success so far are Entertainment, Automotive and Financial Services. I believe national retailers will be the next wave, taking advantage of the increasing market share of devices supporting location-based targeting.

WPN: How far off are we from mobile marketing being essential?

TF: In 2009 we are seeing nearly all major brands embrace mobile in some fashion. After these trailblazers have set the bar, direct response marketers will follow suit.

WPN: I'm told that your company has worked for publishers like Time, CNN Money, and USA Today. What kind of mobile campaigns have these publishers ran? Please tell me a little bit about their results.

TF: Crisp has built a reputation as a leading mobile vendor after working with major media and entertainment companies such as Time, CNN Money, and USA Today to mobilize their web content. Now we are extending these relationships to help premium publishers fully monetize this content via "beyond the banner" mobile advertising. Instead of relegating their inventory as remnant to mobile ad networks, we assist publishers in selling their mobile ad inventory through engaging rich media ad units, ad reporting, advertiser landing sites, and collaborative sales support - all to maximize their mobile revenues.

WPN: What are some do's and don'ts of mobile advertising?

TF: Successful mobile campaigns recognize what will appeal to consumers while they are mobile. Mobile is not simply a repurposed desktop campaign; it must leverage the utility of the device (e.g. click-to-call, click-to-video, click-to-map a dealer/retail location, click-to-buy on iTunes). The biggest mistake you can make is being too cautious to give it a try. The mobile landscape is uncluttered and generating CTRs and user engagement. Now is the time to be seen on mobile.

WPN: What do you think the most effective form of mobile advertising is?

TF: In our experience so far, rich media "beyond-the-banner" advertising generates the highest levels of engagement with consumers. Our full-screen home page takeover ad, which can be served as content is loading, has seen double-digit CTRs.

Crisp NBC Sports Ad

WPN: Do you think most consumers want to be marketed to through their mobile devices?

TF: I think whenever you ask consumers if they want to be marketed to on any medium the answer will be no. However, take a look at how many people really install ad blockers online. It is a tradeoff we become accustomed to. I think if you ask them if they would rather spend $5/mo to access the New York Times on their mobile phone or tolerate some well-targeted, well-executed, non-invasive advertising, I would bet they'd choose the advertising.

WPN: How can a marketer avoid annoying consumers when marketing to them through their mobile device?

TF: The most important factor is relevancy. If an ad is well-targeted and relevant to the consumer, they will not find it annoying. Second, we offer options like frequency-capping and 'skip this ad' features to ensure a positive user experience.

WPN: What are some trends you see growing in the industry in the present? The future?

TF: I see a growing seriousness around mobile advertising. This correlates into serious campaign funding and a close look at campaign metrics. The onslaught of the iPhone and other large screen devices have opened up the industry in ways nothing else could. Now, not only do advertisers have the real estate to advertise, they can do so in a much more effective manner.

WPN: If there's anything else you'd like to say regarding the mobile advertising industry, please feel free to do so.

TF: We see premium publishers moving away from dependence upon mobile ad networks to embracing direct mobile ad sales. Ad networks dominated the first inning of mobile advertising. Now the tide is turning, at least among premium publishers. In the future, ad networks will continue to service remnant inventory and long-tail publishers.

Wrapping Up

I would like to thank Mr. Foran for answering our questions, and providing his insight into the growing industry of mobile marketing. What are your thoughts? Do you think mobile marketing will become unavoidable for businesses?

MySpace Looks Forward to a Future of Gaming and Ad Dollars

Labels: , , , , , , ,

News Corp. Chief Digital Officer of News Corp. Jonathan Miller sat down with Fox Business in a video interview from a tech conference, and talked about MySpace's future, among other things. The interview can be viewed here:

Miller talks about how the company plans to shift the social network into more of an entertainment portal as Facebook has become quite a fierce competitor in terms of social communication on the web. Not that MySpace is abandoning that, but they are looking to get into more areas of entertainment, and according to Miller, part of this strategy will be offering some kind of gaming portal, where users can go and discover new games, and find people to play with. He makes it clear that he is talking about video games and not gambling.

He says MySpace needs to get back to being involved with more aspects of popular culture, and needs to be cleaned up to provide a fast and clean user experience. This is probably a good idea, because usually when people complain about MySpace (at least in my experience), it is about sloppy and unattractive profile pages.

Miller didn't exactly say they were abandoning this either, and in fact, MySpace has acknowledged in the past that they pride themselves on the free expression aspect of the MySpace profile page, but anything they can do to deliver a cleaner experience should work in the site's favor.

The gaming aspect could be a key to MySpace's success though. Look at how much time people spend messing around with Facebook apps. If MySpace can generate some interest from solid games, it could be quite a big draw for many people. Miller notes that the three biggest activities online are communicating, search, and gaming.

Miller suggests that MySpace's monetization in the future will be primarily ad-supported, and he says that there is a major migration of ad dollars to the web. He says the more rich media there is online, the more ad dollars will follow. MySpace plans to remain a major player.

5 Steps to Increase your Google Page Rank.

Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Google Page rank is based on back links. Back links are Links pointing to your website from another website. The more back links you have the higher your PR will be.

1. Join forums, forums are a great way to achieve links to your website. In most forums you are allowed to have a signature and in your signature you can put a link to your website. But another important note to look on is making sure the forum is somewhat related to your website. You will still get credit if it's not, but if it's related to your website than you will be accomplishing two tasks at once.

You will be advertising for your website (bringing in targeted traffic) You will also be building your websites presence.

Your websites presence is very important to your survival. The more people see, or hear about your website the more credibility you will have and this increases your chances of having these visitors come back and possibly become leads.

2. Submit to search engine directories. Search engine directories are a good way to get a free link to your website. They also increase your chances at being listed higher on popular search engines like Google, and overture.

Most search engine directories allow you to submit to their website for free. This will allow you to increase your web presence by being listed on another search engine, and it will also be a free link.

Remember the more links you have the higher your PR will be

3. Using ezine ads (or newsletters). Creating an ezine will probably be the most beneficial step you can take to increasing your web presence. When you create an ezine you will be able to keep visitors coming back to your website for more by using signatures and giving special deals.

Ezine's will also allow you to increase your back links. By creating an ezine you can submit your information about your ezine to an ezine directory. This directory will than link to your website(thus giving you a free link).

4. Creating and publishing articles. Articles are an easy source of generating new traffic. You can include your signature in your article. This will bring in more traffic from article submission directories.

Your signature usually consists of 4 to 8 lines. Usually the first line would be the title of the website that you are trying to advertise. The last line would be the link to the website and the lines in between these would be a sales pitch to draw your viewers into your website.

5. Links from related websites. Gaining links from related websites can be one of the most frustrating tasks you can attempt.

They are very easy to find, but can be somewhat difficult to obtain links from.

To find related websites, all you have to do is go to a search engine... say Google... and type in your subject. Maybe your website is based on ford mustangs.

You go to Google and type in ford mustangs, than you look around for pages that are somewhat related to your website. After you have done this (which should be very easy) you have to contact them in some way to get your link posted on their website. This can be the most difficult task because a lot of webmasters ignore e-mail's from people requesting links because they don't see the importance of it at the time. Some other reasons could be that they are rarely online, or they delete spam mail and sometimes delete their important emails in the process.

Important note: When looking for link partners don't just link with websites that have a page rank of 4 or higher. Link with anyone and everyone you get a chance to. If you link to someone that has a page rank of zero, this will not hurt your page rank. It will only increase it because you are getting a link back to your website. Google doesn't look at your back links page ranks to determine what yours is going to be. It simply looks at how many back links you have.

So if Google one day decided to link to a website that was just created and this website has a page rank of 0 and has a domain that goes something like this: mywebsite.geocities.com it's page rank wouldn't increase even though Google's page rank is 10, it's rank would still be zero because it would only have that one back link.

Adsense Tips for Bloggers

How do you make money from the Google Adsense Program? What AdSense Tips can you share with us?

I have been asked this question so many times in the past few weeks that I thought I should write something on the topic. It seems increasingly bloggers want to try to cover their hosting and ISP costs with some revenue from their blog - and increasingly they're doing it and are able to make a few (or quite a lot) dollars on the side. Many are turning to Google's Adsense program.

Covering costs of my Digital Photography Blog is why I originally signed up with Google Adsense - blogging can get expensive when you have high levels of traffic and a lot of pages.

Whilst the agreement you sign with Google stresses that you are not allowed to give specific information about your earnings from the program I can say that I'm glad I've signed up because its well and truly covered my costs - and then some. In fact I think its quite feasible to expect that Adsense coupled with other strategies for making money from Blogging could quite easily generate a decent living. It takes time and hard work, but I think its very doable. (Update: Since writing this series I've revealed that I am now looking at making over a six figure income this year in 2005 from blogging).

So how do I make money from Google Adsense? Let me share some AdSense Tips that heve helped me.

This will be the first in a series of posts on this topic. Let me say up front I'm no expert - there are a lot of people out there making a lot more money than I am using Adsense - however most of them are not telling their secrets - well not for free anyway. I've got no secrets to hide and am willing to share what I've learnt since I signed up for the program 8 months ago. If you want a REAL expert's opinion on Adsense I'd recommend buying Joel Comm's What Google Never Told You About Making Money with Adsense E-Book. Joel earns $15,000 per month from Adsense and has some good things to share.

I know some bloggers are put off or offended by the idea of making money from blogging so I'll try not to let these posts dominate my blog - however if you are not interested in the topic, simply skip over these posts.

I am going to assume a few things in this series to cut down the amount of introductory comments I have to make. Here is what I am assuming:

  1. You have a blog. Whilst most of the following tips will apply to other types of websites I run Adsense on blogs and will speak from that experience.

  2. You have (or will) read a basic overview of Adsense and have some understanding of what it is.

  3. You have(or will) read the program policies as outlined by Google. These give details of site eligibility, ad placements and other requirements for using the system.

1- The hitch

Description: You are on all fours facing away from your woman, while she lies on her back with her legs in the air.

Benefits for you: The best part of this position is that you have total control of how fast, how slow and how rough it goes. Also, because she gets easy access to your backside, anal stimulation is an easy move to throw into the mix, if you'd like.

Benefits for her: This position mostly looks out for her best interest. She can maximize stimulation of the vaginal walls by constricting the muscles in her vagina, or by opening and closing her thighs. It also facilitates the rubbing of your penis against her clitoris and, as if that weren't enough, she gets to lay back and enjoy the view!

2- The reverse frog squat

Description: Lie on your back with your legs parted, while she leans back with her legs bent close to her body.

Benefits for you: This position lets you lay back and relax. Try it after a stressful day at the office or a strenuous workout that makes you way too lazy for lovemaking.

Benefits for her: Not only is she in complete control in this position, but the angle of penetration can be incredibly arousing for her. Equally arousing may be the feeling of the man's hands caressing her back and sides -- a move made simple by this position.

Chantix: Stop-smoking medication to help you quit

Labels: ,

Smokers who want to stop smoking may consider varenicline (Chantix). Find out if this stop-smoking drug is right for you

How is Chantix different from other stop-smoking aids?

When you smoke, the nicotine from your cigarette causes receptors in your brain to release several chemicals, including dopamine, which cause many of the positive feelings you get when you smoke. When you quit smoking, the lower levels of these chemicals cause the sometimes miserable signs and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Signs and symptoms such as irritability, insomnia and difficulty concentrating begin four to six hours after your last cigarette and can last a month or more after you quit smoking.

Nicotine replacement products, including the patch, gum and lozenges, and bupropion (Zyban), can help you stop smoking, in part, by continuing to stimulate the release of low levels of dopamine and other chemicals in your brain. In this way, these stop-smoking medications decrease your craving for nicotine and reduce the signs and symptoms of withdrawal.

Chantix works in this way, too. Chantix stimulates the release of low levels of dopamine and other chemicals in your brain to help reduce the signs and symptoms of withdrawal. In addition, Chantix blocks nicotine receptors in your brain. So if you lapse and have a cigarette, your cigarette doesn't stimulate your brain's receptors the way it did in the past. Cigarettes become much less pleasurable, and your desire to return to regular smoking again may be reduced.

Kicking Butts and Staying Smoke Free

Labels: ,

All forms of tobacco - cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco - are hazardous. It doesn't help to substitute products that seem like they're better for you than regular cigarettes, such as filtered or low-tar cigarettes.

The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isn't always easy, especially if everyone around you is smoking and offering you cigarettes. It may help to have your reasons for not smoking ready for times you may feel the pressure, such as "I just don't like it" or "I want to stay in shape for soccer" (or football, basketball, or other sport).

The good news for people who don't smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped dramatically. Today, about 23% of high school students smoke.

If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best. Others find that a slower approach is the way to go. Some people find that it helps to go to a support group especially for teens. These are sometimes sponsored by local hospitals or organizations like the American Cancer Society. The Internet offers a number of good resources to help people quit smoking.

When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So don't give up. Some people find they have a few relapses before they manage to quit for good.

Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything - more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live!

EU: Microsoft trying to settle browser case

Labels:

BRUSSELS -

Microsoft Corp. will offer computer users a choice of Web browsers to ward off new European Union antitrust fines, EU regulators said Friday.

The European Commission has charged the company with monopoly abuse for tying the Internet Explorer browser to the Windows operating system installed on most of the world's desktop computers.

It said Microsoft is suggesting that consumers pick a browser from several offered on a ballot screen in its new software release, Windows 7, which will go on sale Oct. 22.

Windows would still include Internet Explorer, but users would be able to disable it. Computer manufacturers could also choose to install other browsers, set them as default and disable Internet Explorer.

Regulators did not say if this was enough to settle antitrust action and allow the company to avoid new fines on top of the euro1.7 million that Microsoft already has paid in a series of battles with the EU executive.

"The Commission welcomes this proposal and will now investigate its practical effectiveness in terms of ensuring genuine consumer choice," they said.

EU officials have warned that their case targets a possible violation of antitrust rules since 1996. Microsoft's proposal affects only its latest browser.

Microsoft spokesman Jesse Verstraete had no immediate comment, but he said the company would issue a statement shortly.

The company's proposal is close to what regulators called for in January when they asked Microsoft to offer several browsers on Windows.

The ballot screen option is also backed by Norwegian mobile Internet browser maker Opera Software ASA, which triggered the EU antitrust case by complaining that Microsoft was unfairly using its power as the dominant supplier of operating system software to squeeze out rivals.

Microsoft earlier suggested stripping Internet Explorer out of Windows to sell it without any Web browsers at all in Europe. The EU rejected this as giving no choice to the 5 percent of consumers who buy Windows software in a stand-alone pack.

Most people buy Windows already installed on a computer assembled by manufacturers such as Dell or HP.

The EU also said Microsoft has offered to share more information to software developers who want to make products compatible with Windows and Windows servers. It said these proposals "require further investigation" before officials could decide on next steps.

Microsoft's proposals will be published on its Web site.

How to Stop Loving a Guy You Still Think Of

Labels: , ,

Breaking up is hard to do. It is even more difficult, when you still think of the other person constantly. If everywhere you go, something reminds you of him, you know you must get thoughts of your former partner out of your mind!

  1. Call up a few of your girlfriends. Find out if they want to go out someplace, like a movie, or maybe a dance club. Wherever you decide to go is better than staying at home and being miserable.

  2. Find someone new to date. Go to a library, coffee shop or a busy book store; anywhere where there might be single guys. You may meet someone nice. Make sure you find out if they are available and if someone asks you out, go and enjoy yourself!

  3. Move on even though it is hard. You have to learn to let them go even if you do not want to. Sometimes the hardest thing is letting go of the responsibility you feel towards the other person. Call a friend of his and ask him or her to watch over them so you don't have to worry anymore.

  4. Understand that it is not easy to break up with a guy. You need to start all over again with someone else. Take it one step at a time, join a support group, or take up a hobby. The most important thing is to find something to keep yourself busy. Remember, you knew how to have fun before this person came into your life.

  5. .Sometimes it helps to think of all the things they did wrong to you while trying to get over him/her.Do you really deserve someone who isn't going to treat you the way you should be treated? If thats the case do they even deserve you?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

WHAT IT'S ABOUT?

A year has passed since the climactic events of 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which culminated in the reemergence of the sinister Lord Voldemort. Darkness is spreading across the muggle and wizard worlds alike as the orthodontically-challenged Bellatrix Lestrange and the rest of her Death Eater crew roam freely between both realms, leaving devastation and chaos in their wake.

Newly famous thanks to his heroic exploits, Harry Potter has barely a chance to cash in on his celebrity before his old pal Dumbledore arrives to whisk him away on an urgent wizarding matter to the town of Budleigh Babberton. It's there the two encounter the eccentric Horace Slughorn, a former professor of potions at Hogwarts who now hides out in the homes of vacationing muggles. Convinced that Slughorn is withholding knowledge crucial to the defeat of Voldemort, Dumbledore enlists his most famous student to help convince the starstruck professor to return to his old position at Hogwarts. He then tasks Harry with finding out what Slughorn is hiding.

As danger mounts outside the school, romance blossoms within it. Oblivious to the affections of Hermione, Ron Weasley has begun dating the cloying busybody Lavender Brown, while Harry has developed a crush of his own on Ron's sister Ginny, who's currently attached to Dean Thomas. It's quite the tangled teenage web; the element of magic, with its love potions and other mind-altering concoctions, only further complicates matters.

Unamused by the romantic proceedings is Draco Malfoy, now clad entirely in black and simmering with hatred and envy for his rival Harry. Draco's rage and resentment make him a perfect pawn for Voldemort, who recruits the angry young lad to aid in the Death Eaters' attempts to infiltrate Hogwarts and exact revenge upon Dumbledore.

Draco's suspicious behavior doesn't go unnoticed by Harry, who becomes convinced that his long-time nemesis is surreptitiously working in league with the Dark Lord. But when his concerns are dismissed by the Hogwarts hierarchy, Harry mounts his own investigation and makes a disturbing discovery: Draco has been receiving help from someone on the inside, a traitor whose efforts could pave the way for Voldemort's ultimate triumph.

WHO'S IN IT?

Looking increasingly comfortable in his adult frame, Daniel Radcliffe is back for his sixth turn as the titular boy wizard in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Other notable returning castmembers include Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid) and Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore). Making his Harry Potter franchise debut in the role of Horace Slughorn is veteran character actor Jim Broadbent.

WHAT'S GOOD?

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director David Yates marks his second stint behind the camera with Prince, taking on what is arguably the most challenging episode of the franchise to date. But he proves more than up to the task, delivering all the visual grandeur and CGI fireworks we've come to expect from the Potter collection while simultaneously tackling the potentially thorny issue of adolescent hormonal urges with warmth, subtlety and a good dose of humor.

Though it clocks in at over two-and-a-half hours, the film never feels dull. Yates establishes a brisk pace from the outset, skillfully transitioning between emotionally dense dialogue exchanges, action-packed set pieces and comic relief. For all the travails facing young Harry, he's never weighed down by the gravity of his situation, and neither is the storyline, which thankfully avoids becoming excessively dark.

Equal parts scary, funny, thrilling and touching, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is quite simply the best Potter flick yet.

WHAT'S BAD?

For all of its fevered set-up, the film's ending is something of a letdown: a brief, unspectacular climax followed by a somber denouement. While it effectively sets the stage for the final episode of the franchise, to be depicted in the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it will undoubtedly leave many a viewer feeling a bit dissatisfied.

FAVORITE SCENE?

For sheer visual and technical filmmaking wizardry, the quidditch sequence is hard to beat.

China's New Propaganda Machine

Labels:

By NICHOLAS BEQUELIN | From today's Wall Street Journal Asia

China is about to embark on a multibillion dollar media expansion overseas, including the establishment of a 24-hour English language all-news channel modeled after CNN. These are only the most recent steps in a methodical strategy for Chinese state media to "go global" and make "the voice of China better heard in international affairs" -- a plan set in motion by President Hu Jintao immediately after his accession to power in 2002. Since then, Chinese state broadcasters have considerably strengthened their foreign news operations, enhanced foreign language services and established the supporting bureaucracy to get the government's message out swiftly when news breaks.

The sheer scale of these plans raises many questions about China's long-term objectives. Can state-run broadcasters, whose traditional role is to be the "throat and tongue" of the Communist Party, really turn into competitors for the likes of CNN and the BBC? Or could China's quest for international audiences lead to a loosening of the tight censorship rules that continue to straightjacket its reporting? There is, after all, something natural in the aspiration of a rising global power to match its newly acquired economic might with a corresponding increase in its "soft" power, and its growing involvement in world affairs with a bigger voice in the international arena. Many governments do just that with state-sponsored broadcasting, like Voice of America or Germany's Deutsche Welle. So what's different with China?

The difference lies in the strong control the Chinese government and Chinese Communist Party exert over news and information. Sure, in recent years China Central Television (CCTV) and even the People's Daily look slicker, more contemporary and less political than in the past. But this has not changed the fundamental premise that all information on state-run channels must reflect the government's views.

This is no surprise. The state itself refers to all media work abroad as wai xuan, or "external propaganda." On its official Web site -- but only in Chinese -- CCTV describes itself as "the mouthpiece of the Party and the government," lists its main operations under the heading "propaganda situation," and refers to its new foreign language channels as "reaching a new stage in external propaganda." Xinhua -- a self-depicted "news agency with Chinese characteristics" -- describes its activities as "conducted from start to finish under the direct leadership of the central party authorities." Its current director is the vice-chair of the Central Committee's propaganda department. For the Party, propaganda is not a degraded form of information -- it is information. None of this context appears in the English language versions of these Web sites.

This is not to say that there is no quality journalism in China. Over the past 20 years the marketization of the Chinese media industry has led to an explosion in the number of "commercial" newspapers, magazines, Internet information portals and radio and television stations. Although they remain controlled by the government through a combination of ownership, licensing and administrative shackles, many companies have discovered that hard news is the best way to attract an audience. Faced with fierce competition, the Party has responded by giving more leeway to the most prominent state-run organs and encouraging the adoption of Western-style media marketing techniques. Even CCTV now has an excellent Chinese-language investigative program called "News Probe," which has broadcast stories on subjects such as AIDS orphans, pollution, land grabs and corruption.

However, these programs have not made their way to the wai xuan media. English-language news from China is not about informing the foreign public; it is about channeling a specific view of China to the rest of the world. The Party's information management is based on the principle of neiwai butong, or "domestic and overseas differ." Beijing's 45 billion yuan investment will be geared mainly to sprucing up these outlets for foreign viewers, but the fundamental mission won't change.

It's not just English-language viewers who will receive this polished view of China. In addition to the forthcoming "Chinese CNN," CCTV recently added French- and Spanish-language broadcasts and has plans to launch Arabic and Russian channels this year. While American networks are slashing their overseas operations, state-owned Xinhua news agency is considering expanding its overseas bureaus to 186 from 100.

Beijing might be right in thinking that improved "external propaganda" will provide an additional weapon to fight back against its critics, but ultimately it will come at the expense of something far more important: the soft and persuasive power that can only come with a free, unbiased media that informs rather than misleads.

Average approximate penis size based on ethnicity

Labels: , , ,

Average approximate penis size based on ethnicity (age 16 and over):

African/black: 6.74"

Native American: 6.49"

Middle Eastern: 6.28"

European/white: 6.26"

Hispanic: 6.03"

Asian/Pacific Islander: 5.50"

We've all heard the politically correct claim that penis size doesn't vary by ethnicity, but these findings show a clear correlation, at least among certain groups. African-based ethnicities have the largest average penises by far, and Asians have the smallest, with over an inch separating the two - quite a lot for considering that these are broad averages. Of course, there are many, many exceptions in all groups.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

His story is the American story - values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.

With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton's army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank.

After working his way through college with the help of scholarships and student loans, President Obama moved to Chicago, where he worked with a group of churches to help rebuild communities devastated by the closure of local steel plants.

He went on to attend law school, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Upon graduation, he returned to Chicago to help lead a voter registration drive, teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and remain active in his community.

President Obama's years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. He was elected the 44th President of the United States on November 4, 2008, and sworn in on January 20, 2009. He and his wife, Michelle, are the proud parents of two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7.

Facts about penis size

Labels: , , , ,

Written by Dr David Delvin, GP and family planning specialist and Christine Webber, psychotherapist

Even in this supposedly enlightened century, men fret about penis size. Though the vast majority of guys have more than enough bulk to perform well as lovers, there is a widespread masculine obsession that 'more would be better'.

We get a constant flow of emails and letters from males who are worried that they are 'too small'. Vast sums of money can be made by exploiting this obsession, but other than surgery, there is little that is clinically proven to increase penis size.

Any woman reading this article may find it puzzling that so many men are concerned about the length of their penis and wish they had 'just a couple of inches more'. But that's the way that a lot of men are.

Size matters

To the average man, his penis is, consciously or unconsciously, one of the most important things in the whole world. At an early age he discovers it and immediately becomes fascinated by it.

But then a note of uncertainty enters his mind: 'Isn't mine rather small?' Look at Dad's, look at big brother's, look at those in the men's changing room - and he asks himself if he will be as big as that.

And so he goes on through life, always a tiny bit sensitive about the size of his organ, always convinced that it would be nicer if it were just that little bit longer.

No matter how often it's written that penile size doesn't matter, and that women aren't attracted to a man because of the length of his organ, the average male continues to think the same way.

The average female cannot understand this obsession with penile measurement. So if you're a woman, never belittle a man's penis in bed, even as a joke, or say anything to indicate that you think it's small. The guy may take you seriously, and if he does, he'll be deeply hurt.

We have known men who have gone on to have problems with impotence (erectile dysfunction) after someone made an unthinking remark about their dimensions. But almost all of these men had a perfectly normal male organ. Each one just thought he was very small compared with other men.

It is also worth noting two points about women:

some women really dislike the idea of a large penis, and may be frightened by one that is too long.

some women are much more impressed by the thickness of a penis, rather than its length. This is because some females like the sense of feeling stretched round the entrance to the vagina - so if a guy is quite broad at the base of his penis, this can feel very exciting and satisfying to such women

The Seven Basic Needs of a Woman

Labels: , ,

Any husband can make himself irresistible to his wife by learning to meet her seven basic marital needs:

1. Her need for a spiritual leader. He is a man of courage, conviction, commitment, compassion, and character. He takes the initiative in cultivating a spiritual environment for the family. He becomes a capable and competent student of God's Word and lives out before all a life founded on the Word of God. He leads his wife in becoming a woman of God, and he takes the lead in training the children in the things of the Lord. (Psalm 1, Ephesians 5:23-27)

2. Her need to personal affirmation/appreciation. He praises her for personal attributes and qualities. He extols her virtues as a wife, mother, and homemaker. He openly commends her, in the presence of others, as a marvelous mate, friend, lover, and companion. She feels that to him, no one is more important in this world. (Proverbs 31:28-29, Song of Solomon 4:1-7, 6:4-9, 7:1-9)

3. Her need for personal affection (romance). He showers her with timely >and generous displays of affection. He also tells her how much he cares for her with a steadfast flow of words, cards, flowers, gifts, and common courtesies. Remember: Affection is the environment in which sexual union is enjoyed and a wonderful marriage developed. (Song of Solomon 6:10, 13, Ephesians 5:28-29,33)

4. Her need for intimate conversation. He talks with her at the feeling level (heart to heart). He listens to her thoughts (i.e., her heart) about the events of her day with sensitivity, interest, and concern. Conversations with her convey a desire to understand her, not to change her. (Song of Solomon 2:8-14, 8:13-14, I Peter 3:7)

5. Her need for honest and openness. He looks into her eyes and, in love, tells her what he really thinks (Ephesians 4:15). He explains his plans and actions clearly and completely because he regards himself as responsible for her. He wants her to trust him and feel secure. (Proverbs 15:22-23)

6. Her need for home support and stability. He firmly shoulders the responsibility to house, feed, and clothe the family. He provides and protects, and he does not feel sorry for himself when things get tough. Instead he looks for concrete ways to improve home life. He desires to raise their marriage and family to a safer and more fulfilling level. Remember: The husband/father is the security hub of the family (I Timothy 5:8)

7. Her need for family commitment. He puts his family first. He commits his time and energy to the spiritual, moral, and intellectual development of the children. For example, he prays with them (especially at night by the bedside), he reads to them, he engages in sports with them, and takes them on other outings. He does not play the fool's game of working long hours, trying to get ahead, while children and spouse languish in neglect. (Ephesians 6:4, Colossians 3:19-20)

The Elecom 10 Port USB Hub

Labels: ,

I've never really had a ton of USB items that needed plugged in, but even with as few as I have, it can be extremely frustrating when you run out of ports. Then you get an extra hub and of course, that one fills up eventually. So although you may not really need 10 different USB ports, you're just giving yourself the option to have a lot plugged in at once. It's always better to have too many USB ports rather than too few.

The Elecom Compact 10 Port USB Hub would definitely leave plenty of breathing room to grow. Which would be especially nice for those that have a family computer. You could leave more plugged in and not have to worry about anyone fighting over who gets to use the spare port to charge their camera or iPod. The USB Hub comes in three different colors, you can purchase it in either black, silver or white. You can find it for ¥ 9,500.00 or about $101 from Geek Stuff 4 U, which might be a little more than some are willing to spend just for a little extra convenience.

Digital Foci Photo Book

Labels: ,

I've reported on Digital Foci products before, and they are a company that does not disappoint when it comes to their digital photo frames. The Digital Foci Photo Book is no exception to that rule.

The Photo Book PBK-080 harkens back to the days when people stored their photos in quality albums. It has a leather-like case that magnetically seals, and, once fully charged, the user is free to download his or her photos through memory cards or by USB flash drives to internal memory.

The downloading was quite simple as it recognized my photo folders from my thumb drive right away, and they copied and pasted into the Photo Book for permanent storage. There is about 4GB worth of storage on the device itself, and it can even do video.

I found that the Photo book arranged my photos in a very classy way, and even had music. I'm not certain how to change the music, but I was able to do some pretty cool slideshows that looked very good on its 8-inch screen.

In short, the Photo Book from Digital Foci is the perfect gift for anyone in the family who is into collecting old photos or scrapbooking. It is also a very professional tool for those who want to make business presentations as well. You should be able to purchase it at the Digital Foci site for about $189.00

The Memo Clock reminds you of important events

Labels: ,

I always appreciate the awesome designs that are completely mind blowing. However, sometimes it's nice to show a little appreciation for the simpler designs. After all, they are the ones you're more likely to see hitting the stores and making your day to day life a little bit more convenient on a regular basis. Yes, the over the top designs have their purpose, but so do the everyday ones. This clock definitely falls under the simpler designs, but it would make things a little easier. Hang it on the wall and then you can write down quick notes for you or your loved ones.

It would thankfully make it possible to have less items cluttering up your wall space. With this you'd just need this instead of a clock was well as a message board. It'd be great for anything from your kitchen to having it hung within your office to remind you of meetings. Sadly this is of course still a design, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this one make it to stores.

SodaStream Soda Maker kits save pop fans on soft drinks

Labels: , , , ,

If you knew anything about me, you'd know that I should probably have stock in Coca Cola since I drink so much of the stuff. I know, I know, worst thing for me. But it's the one vice I allow myself. Considering a can of Diet Coke can run you over a buck these days, the cost can not only add up, but it's one of the largest profit margins there is in the snack world next to popcorn. So, how can you lower your costs and still get your soda pop fix? Look no further than SodaStream.

The SodaStream Soda Maker kits can reduce the cost of soft drinks to about a quarter a can, and it uses ordinary tap water to do it in less than a minute. The kit comes with six different flavors to reproduce your favorite drinks and a carbonator which injects carbon dioxide through the jet soda maker into the mix to give your drink that fizz. Also included are 2 reusable bottles (even BPA free) and a 3 year warranty.

Ganguro fashion

Labels: ,

Ganguro (ガングロ) is an alternative fashion trend of blonde or orange hair and tanned skin among young Japanese women which peaked in popularity around the year 2000, but remains evident today. The Shibuya and Ikebukuro districts of Tokyo are the center of ganguro fashion.

Characteristics

Ganguro appeared as a new fashion style in Japan in the early 1990s and is prevalent mostly among young women and women in their early 20s to this date. In ganguro fashion, a deep tan is combined with hair dyed in shades of orange to blonde, or a silver grey known as "high bleached". Black ink is used as eye-liner and white concealer is used as lipstick and eyeshadow. False eyelashes, plastic facial gems, and pearl powder are often added to this. Platform shoes and brightly-coloured outfits complete the ganguro look. Also typical of ganguro fashion are tie-dyed sarongs, miniskirts, stickers on the face, and lots of bracelets, rings, and necklaces.

Ganguro falls into the larger subculture of gyaru (from English "gal"), a slang term used for various groups of young women, usually referring to overly childish or rebellious girls. Researchers in the field of Japanese studies believe that ganguro is a form of revenge against traditional Japanese society due to resentment of neglect, isolation, and constraint of Japanese society. This is their attempt at individuality, self-expression, and freedom, in open defiance of school standards and regulations. The deep ganguro tan is in direct conflict with traditional Japanese ideas of feminine beauty. Due to this, as well as their use of slang, unconventional fashion sense, and perceived lack of hygiene, ganguro gals are almost always portrayed negatively by the Japanese media.

Fashion magazines like Egg and Kawaii magazine have had a direct influence on the ganguro. Other popular ganguro magazines include Popteen and Ego System. The ganguro culture is often linked with Para Para, a Japanese dance style. However, most para para dancers are not ganguro, and most ganguro are not para para dancers, though there are many who are ganguro or gal and dance para para.

One of the most famous early ganguro girls was known as Buriteri, nicknamed after the black soy sauce used to flavour yellowtail fish in teriyaki cooking. Egg made her a star by frequently featuring her in its pages during the height of the ganguro craze. After modelling and advertising for the Shibuya tanning salon "Blacky", social pressure and negative press convinced Buriteri to retire from the ganguro lifestyle.

Embed YouTube Videos in PowerPoint for Publishing on the Web

Labels: , , , ,

There are basically two ways by which we can embed YouTube clips in PowerPoint presentations:

Option A: You download the YouTube video as an FLV file, convert the video to a format that PowerPoint can understand (e.g. AVI or WMV) and then use the "Insert Movie" command to embed that clip anywhere in the presentation.

Option B: Or you can add a Shockwave Flash object to your PowerPoint slide and set the Movie property of that control to the URL of the YouTube video. For detailed instructions, please refer to the following tutorials:

  1. How to Insert Flash Movies in PowerPoint

  2. How to Insert YouTube videos in PowerPoint

The first option is preferred when you want to play videos in offline mode while the next option is useful if you want to embed streaming videos in your PowerPoint slides.

The only problem (or limitation) with either techniques is that once you upload the PowerPoint deck on to the web, the embedded YouTube clips would no longer play as most PowerPoint hosting sites don't recognize Flash objects.

Well, not anymore. Author Stream, a SlideShare like PowerPoint sharing site, has released an Office plug-in that lets you embed YouTube videos in PPT slides but the the more interesting part is that when you upload this deck to the web, the YouTube videos aren't lost.

Once installed, the plug-in will add a new option in the PowerPoint ribbon from where you can search for video clips on YouTube or, if you are looking to embed any particular video, just copy-paste the YouTube URL into the add-in as in this screenshot.

In addition to YouTube videos, the add-in also lets you search and insert pictures from Bing Image Search into PowerPoint slides but there's no way for you to attribute images or limit your image search to Creative Commons content.

Offisync is another add-in that brings Google Images into PowerPoint.

Once you are done adding videos to PowerPoint, you can either play them as a local slideshow or upload these slides to the Author Stream website (using the plug-in itself) and you will then be able to embed the presentation into your website or share it over the Internet - see example.

Internally, the Author Stream plug-in too uses the Shockwave Flash object technique to embed YouTube videos in slides but it's integrated with YouTube search as well and that alone makes this add-on a very useful one.

Now Slideshare too allows users to embed YouTube videos into PowerPoint slides but that can only be done once the PPT or PDF files has been uploaded onto the SlideShare website. In case of Author Stream, you can insert video at the deck design stage itself and you have full control over the size and place of the YouTube clip in the slide.

YouTube clips embedded through Slideshare always occupy the whole slide and there's no option to add text or images in the slide that contains video but it's still a very useful option for people who don't have Windows and PowerPoint 2007.
